Records you don’t own, but should: Sleep: Dopesmoker

Sleep – Dopesmoker

1999 – Tee Pee Records

The legend behind this record is long and shrouded in turmoil. The entire album is one long song, an ode to weed and the cosmos. That was the main contention that Sleeps record label had. They insisted on editing it down into separate songs. Sleep would not. Hilarious legal wranglings ensue. Let me say this about this record: you have to really immerse yourself in it. This is in no way an easy listen. But, if you give yourself the time and the dedication, you will be rewarded with the single heaviest recording ever to be committed to vinyl.  It is long and meandering, but with purpose. This, to any naysayers, is what weed was created for: To make amazing music. It is powerful and thought provoking and important. To quote the first line in the song:

“Drop out of life with bong in hand

Follow the Smoke toward the Riff filled Land”
and enjoy.

  1. I was introduced to this by a friend of mine, and I was like: how have I not heard this before!?

Definitely agree with you: an album you NEED to hear.
